Chapter 12 - The Morning of the HearingClaire arrived at the courthouse wearing a pale blue maternity dress and flat shoes.
Rachel walked beside her.
“Remember,” Rachel said. “You do not have to sign anything.”
“I know.”
Daniel waited near the courtroom doors with Vanessa.
Vanessa wore a fitted red dress and matching heels.
She looked less like a witness than a woman attending her own celebration.
Daniel approached Claire.
“You look tired.”
Claire said nothing.
He lowered his voice.
“This can be painless. Sign, take the apartment, and disappear.”
Rachel stepped between them.
“Speak through counsel.”
Vanessa laughed.
“She still needs someone to protect her.”
Claire looked directly at her.
“No. I finally learned how to protect myself.”
The courtroom had not yet opened.
Several attorneys and courthouse employees gathered in the hallway.
Daniel’s lawyer handed Rachel a revised settlement.
The new version included an immediate transfer of Claire’s remaining personal assets.
Rachel pretended to study it.
Daniel grew impatient.
“Sign it now.”
“We’re outside the courtroom,” Claire said.
“You’ve wasted enough of my time.”
Vanessa moved closer.
“She wants attention. That’s all this pregnancy has ever been about.”
Claire felt anger rise.
“You helped steal money using my name.”
Vanessa’s smile disappeared.
Daniel grabbed Claire’s elbow.
“Lower your voice.”
Claire pulled away.
An officer looked toward them.
Rachel warned, “Do not touch my client.”
Daniel released her.
But Vanessa saw the attention around them and panicked.
If Claire spoke loudly enough, the entire courthouse might hear about the forged accounts.
Vanessa stepped forward, her face twisting with rage.
