Chapter 3 - Five Years EarlierFive years earlier, Claire Whitmore had met Daniel Mercer at a charity dinner in Chicago.

She was twenty-seven, quiet, and dressed more simply than the wealthy guests around her.

Daniel mistook privacy for poverty.

Claire was the only daughter of Judge Thomas Whitmore, one of the most respected federal judges in Illinois.

But she rarely used his name.

After her mother died, Claire and her father had grown distant.

Thomas buried himself in work.

Claire built a life without relying on his reputation.

She became a financial compliance analyst, specializing in tracing suspicious transfers and corporate fraud.

Daniel saw only a soft-spoken woman living in a small apartment.

He presented himself as a self-made real estate developer.

He remembered her coffee order.

He sent flowers to her office.

He listened when she spoke about losing her mother.

For nearly a year, he seemed gentle.

When he proposed, Claire believed she had finally found the kind of home she had missed.

Her father attended the wedding, but Daniel met him only briefly.

Thomas introduced himself simply as “Claire’s father.”

Daniel never recognized him outside his courtroom robes.

Claire noticed how Daniel dismissed the older man almost immediately.

“He seems cold,” Daniel said afterward.

“He’s complicated,” Claire replied.

Daniel smiled and kissed her forehead.

“You don’t need him anymore. You have me.”

At the time, Claire thought it was devotion.

Years later, she would understand it had been the first step in isolating her.

👉 Daniel had not fallen in love with Claire’s weakness—he had carefully created the weakness he later planned to use against her.
