Chapter 5 - The Forged SignatureClaire stared at the document until the letters blurred.

The transfer authorized $1.8 million from a marital investment account into a company called V.R. Consulting.

Her signature appeared at the bottom.

But Claire had never signed it.

She compared it to other records.

The forgery was nearly perfect.

Someone had copied the shape of her letters from older contracts.

Claire searched the company registry.

V.R. Consulting belonged to Vanessa Reed.

At first, the name meant nothing.

Then Claire found hotel payments, jewelry purchases, and a luxury apartment leased through the same company.

Daniel came home after midnight.

Claire closed the laptop before he entered.

“Still awake?” he asked.

“The baby was moving.”

She was six months pregnant then.

Daniel barely glanced at her belly.

He smelled of expensive perfume she did not own.

The next morning, Claire visited a private bank branch and placed copies of the forged documents in a safe-deposit box.

She also sent encrypted files to an attorney named Rachel Stone, a former colleague she trusted.

Rachel called within an hour.

“Claire, these aren’t just suspicious transfers.”

“What are they?”

“Possible fraud. Money laundering. Forgery. And your name is being used as authorization.”

Claire felt the room tilt.

“Can Daniel make me responsible?”

“If he controls the narrative first, he can try.”

That evening, Daniel arrived with flowers.

Behind him stood a woman in a red coat.

“This is Vanessa,” he said. “She’ll be helping with the company.”

Vanessa looked directly at Claire’s pregnant belly and smiled.

Claire recognized the initials immediately.
