Chapter 17 - Daniel Turns on VanessaThree weeks later, Daniel appeared at a detention hearing in a gray jail uniform.

His expensive suits were gone.

His confidence remained.

Through his attorney, he claimed Vanessa had created the fraudulent companies.

He said she forged Claire’s signature.

He insisted Vanessa arranged the break-in and threatened Marcus without his knowledge.

Vanessa learned about his accusations from her lawyer.

Her loyalty vanished instantly.

She turned over hundreds of messages.

In them, Daniel instructed her where to move money.

He approved forged documents.

He promised marriage after Claire signed the settlement.

He also wrote that Claire would be “easy to erase” because she had no family support.

Vanessa’s attorney negotiated cooperation in exchange for consideration at sentencing.

She admitted kicking Claire intentionally.

She admitted she had wanted to frighten her into signing.

She admitted Daniel had told her courthouse security would treat the incident as a domestic dispute.

But the security footage showed Vanessa taking two deliberate steps before kicking Claire.

No stumble.

No self-defense.

No confusion.

Daniel’s defense collapsed further when Marcus testified.

He presented emails warning Daniel that the transfers were illegal.

Daniel had replied:

Put Claire’s authorization on it. She won’t understand what she’s signing.

Claire sat behind Rachel, listening.

Daniel finally looked toward her.

He expected tears.

Claire met his gaze without blinking.
