Rachel traced the notarization.
The notary was an employee of Daniel’s company.
The same employee had helped fabricate medical records from a private physician Daniel paid.
The physician had never examined Claire.
Investigators found emails between Daniel and Vanessa.
Once the baby was born, they planned to present the forged agreement during an emergency custody hearing.
Vanessa had written:
After she loses the baby and the money, she’ll disappear.
Claire’s hand trembled.
“She wanted my child?”
Rachel hesitated.
“She wanted control. Daniel apparently promised her they would raise the baby together.”
Thomas walked to the window, struggling to contain his anger.
Claire surprised them both.
She did not cry.
She folded the papers and placed them back in the envelope.
“I want every document examined.”
Rachel nodded.
“I want every person who helped them charged.”
“We’ll pursue it.”
“And I want Daniel to hear me say, under oath, that he failed.”
Thomas turned toward her.
For years, Daniel had trained Claire to believe silence kept her safe.
Now the woman in the hospital bed no longer looked afraid.
She looked ready.
The contractions slowed by morning.
Doctors confirmed that the baby remained healthy.
Claire placed both hands over her belly.
“You’re staying with me,” she whispered.
