Chapter 15 - The Hospital ConfessionDoctors rushed Claire into an examination room.

The baby’s heartbeat remained stable, but the kick had triggered contractions.
She was admitted for observation.
Thomas stayed beside her.
For hours, neither knew what to say.
Finally, Claire whispered, “I’m sorry I didn’t call you.”
Thomas lowered his head.
“I gave you reasons not to.”
After Claire’s mother died, Thomas had hidden inside his work.
He missed birthdays.
He answered grief with silence.
When Daniel encouraged Claire to cut contact, the distance already existed.
“I thought you had chosen your career over me,” Claire said.
“I thought giving you space was respect.”
“It felt like abandonment.”
Thomas’s eyes filled.
“I failed you.”
Claire reached for his hand.
“Daniel used what was already broken.”
Thomas held her fingers carefully.
“Then we repair it. Not because of this case. Because you’re my daughter.”
Rachel arrived with news.
Vanessa had been charged with aggravated assault against a pregnant woman.
Daniel had been arrested for conspiracy, fraud, forgery, witness intimidation, and obstruction.
Marcus Hale was safe and cooperating.
Claire should have felt victorious.
Instead, she stared at the fetal monitor.
“What if Daniel gets custody someday?”
Rachel shook her head.
“The recordings, threats, and criminal charges make that extremely unlikely.”
Thomas added, “And you will never face him alone again.”
A nurse entered with a sealed envelope recovered from Daniel’s attorney.
Inside was a second custody agreement Claire had never seen.
It had already been signed in her name.
Another forgery.

This one granted Daniel sole custody immediately after birth.
👉 Daniel’s plan had never been limited to stealing Claire’s assets—he had intended to take her baby before she ever left the hospital.
