A man’s voice said, “Vanessa wants everything connected to Hale.”
Another replied, “Daniel said no loose ends before Monday.”
Rachel sent the recording to investigators.
The voices were identified as two private security contractors hired through Vanessa’s company.
Police detained both men.
One agreed to cooperate.
He admitted they had searched Rachel’s office.
He also revealed that Marcus Hale had not disappeared voluntarily.
Daniel’s associates had threatened Marcus’s daughter.
Marcus had gone into hiding.
Investigators found him in a motel outside Milwaukee.
He was frightened, but alive.
After learning the contractors had been arrested, Marcus agreed to return.
The case was becoming larger than the divorce.
Prosecutors began examining Daniel’s companies.
But they needed time.
Rachel advised Claire to proceed with the settlement conference as planned.
“Daniel must believe Monday is still his victory.”
Claire nodded.
That Sunday night, she finally opened the letter to her father.
She added one sentence.
I know you may not forgive me for shutting you out, but I need you to know I never stopped loving you.
She drove to Thomas’s home.
The porch light was on.
She stood at the gate for ten minutes.
Then fear defeated her.
Claire placed the letter in the mailbox and left.
Thomas found it an hour later.
By midnight, he had read it six times.
