Chapter 7 - The Manufactured BreakdownDaniel began creating witnesses.
He told employees Claire had become irrational during pregnancy.
He told neighbors she screamed at him for no reason.
He told his attorney she had threatened to take the baby and disappear.
None of it was true.
Then items began vanishing from the house.
Her passport.
Her mother’s jewelry.
The flash drive she had hidden in her desk.
Claire knew Daniel was searching.
She installed a small audio recorder inside the lining of her handbag.
Two nights later, she captured Daniel speaking to Vanessa in the kitchen.
“She’ll sign once she realizes she has nowhere to go,” Daniel said.
“What if she refuses?” Vanessa asked.
“Then we use the evaluation.”
Claire pressed herself against the hallway wall.
“What evaluation?” Vanessa whispered.
“The doctor’s report.”
“You already have one?”
“I have a doctor willing to say pregnancy triggered paranoia.”
Vanessa laughed softly.
“And after she signs?”
“The house, the accounts, the company shares—everything returns to me. Then we make sure she can’t challenge custody.”
Claire covered her mouth to stop herself from gasping.
Daniel was not merely divorcing her.
He planned to take her money, blame her for his crimes, and separate her from her unborn child.
The next morning, Claire drove to Rachel’s office.
Rachel listened to the recording twice.
“We need to move carefully,” she said. “If he discovers what you have, he may become dangerous.”
“He already is.”
Rachel opened a locked drawer.

“Then we prepare for court—and we make him believe you’re still afraid.”
👉 To expose Daniel completely, Claire would have to walk into his trap and pretend she had no evidence at all.
