Chapter 2 - The Name She Never UsedThe hallway fell silent.

Even Vanessa stopped breathing.
Daniel looked from Claire to the judge, then back again.
“Your daughter?” he repeated.
Judge Thomas Whitmore ignored him.
He crossed the marble floor and knelt beside Claire, his judicial robe spreading around him.
“Claire, look at me.”
Her eyes opened.
For the first time since Vanessa’s kick, Claire’s fear loosened.
“Dad,” she whispered.
Daniel staggered backward.
In five years of marriage, Claire had never introduced him to her father.
She had said only that they were estranged.
Daniel had assumed her father was ashamed of her—or dead.
He had never bothered to ask more.
Judge Whitmore looked toward the medic.
“Is the baby in immediate danger?”
“We need to transport her now.”
Claire gripped her father’s wrist.
“The hearing,” she said weakly. “Daniel wants me to sign everything over.”
Her father’s jaw tightened.
“No document matters more than you and your child.”
One officer placed a hand on Vanessa’s arm.
Vanessa jerked away.
“This is ridiculous. She attacked me first.”
The second officer pointed toward the camera.
“We’ll review the footage.”
Daniel quickly stepped forward.
“Your Honor, this is a private marital matter.”
Judge Whitmore rose slowly.
“No,” he said. “A woman being assaulted in a courthouse is a criminal matter.”
He turned to the officers.
“Preserve every second of that recording.”
Then he looked directly at Daniel.
“And do not allow either of them to leave.”
