Chapter 9 - THE PRICE OF SILENCE
By morning, video of the assault had spread across social media.
Leah’s recording showed David dragging Maya by her hair.
Another guest’s video captured Rebecca’s words clearly.
A wife learns respect.
The Langford family released a statement before Maya left the hospital.
It described the incident as “a private marital dispute distorted by incomplete footage.”
It claimed Maya had suffered an emotional episode.
David’s attorney suggested he had restrained her to prevent self-harm.
Maya read the statement twice.
Then she vomited.
“They’re saying I did this to myself.”
Elena took the phone away.
“They are trying to make you defend yourself while you’re still in pain.”
David was released on bond that afternoon under a temporary no-contact order.
He posted no public message.
Instead, flowers arrived at Elena’s house.
The card read:
You know I would never hurt you intentionally. Tell the truth before this destroys everyone.
Maya photographed the card and gave it to police.
Then an unknown account sent her a short video.
It showed the front of Elena’s house.
The message beneath it read:
Your mother cannot protect you forever.
Police increased patrols near the property.
Charles Avery filed for an emergency protective order and requested a freeze on any transactions involving the Bennett Family Trust.
Meanwhile, Marcus provided investigators with the restaurant footage, Rebecca’s bribe attempt and access logs showing that David had entered the building’s accounting office after hours several times.
“He had no reason to be in there,” Marcus said.
The accounting office contained lease records for the property.
When auditors compared those records with Langford Dining Group’s books, they found two different sets of numbers.
One showed the company was behind on rent.
The other falsely claimed the rent had been paid.
