Chapter 10 - THE HOUSE WITHOUT LOCKS
Elena brought Maya back to the house where she had grown up.
Her bedroom still had pale-blue walls and a scratch near the window from the night she tried to move a desk by herself at sixteen.
Everything was familiar.
Nothing felt normal.
Maya woke whenever a car slowed outside.
She apologized when she dropped a glass.
She asked permission before using her mother’s washing machine.
On the third morning, Elena stopped her in the hallway.
“You never need permission to exist in this house.”
Maya began to cry.
David had never forbidden her from doing laundry.
He had never written rules on the wall.
His control had been quieter.
He criticized how she folded towels.
He asked why she needed to wash clothes when he was working.
He sighed when she used too much detergent.
Eventually, Maya learned to ask before doing ordinary things.
A trauma counselor helped her name what had happened.
Coercive control.
Financial abuse.
Isolation.
Violence.
Words turned invisible fear into something real.
Maya also began creating a timeline.
She listed every missing payment.
Every document David asked her to sign.
Every time Rebecca described her as unstable.
Then she remembered a safe hidden behind a painting in David’s home office.
He had once opened it while she stood in the hallway.
Inside were blue folders bearing the Bennett Properties logo.
Charles obtained a court order allowing Maya to collect personal belongings with police present.
David was forbidden from being there.
Rebecca arrived instead.
She stood in the doorway while Maya entered the house.
“You’ve embarrassed this family enough,” Rebecca said.
Maya kept walking.
“You mean I exposed it.”
When officers opened the office safe, the blue folders were gone.
But beneath the bottom shelf, they found a small external hard drive.
