“Stay down.”
David Langford twisted his fist deeper into Maya’s hair and forced her face toward the white tablecloth.
Crystal glasses rattled.
A plate struck the floor.
Maya gripped the edge of her chair, fighting to keep herself from collapsing as pain burned across her scalp.
Around them, the crowded dining room went silent.
David’s mother, Rebecca, remained seated in her beige suit and pearl necklace. Instead of stopping her son, she lifted her wineglass with a satisfied smile.
“A wife learns respect,” she said.
Maya’s eyes found her mother across the table.
Elena Bennett was already standing.
Her face had gone pale, but her hand was steady as she placed her phone on the table.
The screen showed an active 911 call.
“Take your hand off her,” Elena said.
David glanced at the phone.
For one second, fear crossed his face.
Then his grip tightened.
“You’re not calling anyone,” he warned. “You know what this will do to your family’s name.”
Elena stepped closer.
“I know exactly what it will do to yours.”
At the host stand, restaurant manager Marcus Hale watched the security feed. He signaled an employee to lock the private exit and call building security.
A young server named Leah quietly raised her own phone and began recording.
David finally released Maya.
She fell against the table, shaking.
Rebecca’s smile vanished as dozens of phones turned toward them.
Then faint police sirens sounded outside.
Elena wrapped one arm around her daughter.
“Everyone saw what you did.”
David looked up at the small red light on the ceiling camera.
But it was not the assault alone that terrified him.
His eyes dropped toward the unsigned envelope beneath Maya’s broken plate.
The papers inside were worth millions.
