Chapter 4 - REBECCA’S LESSONS
Rebecca never raised her voice when she wanted to hurt Maya.
She used concern.
“David says you’ve been emotional,” she told Maya during lunch one afternoon.
“I’ve been asking questions.”
“Constant questioning exhausts a husband.”
“Money is missing.”
“David is building your future.”
“With money from my account?”
Rebecca placed her napkin beside her plate.
“In our family, the men make financial decisions.”
“My father never treated my mother that way.”
“Your father left your mother with too much influence. Look how suspicious she has made you.”
That evening, David accused Maya of embarrassing Rebecca.
“You confronted her in public.”
“We were alone.”
“The staff heard.”
“The staff was across the room.”
David stepped close enough that Maya could smell whiskey.
“You always need the last word.”
She tried to walk away.
He caught her wrist.
Not hard enough to leave a bruise.
Hard enough to frighten her.
Then he released her and apologized.
“I’m under pressure,” he whispered. “I need you beside me, not against me.”
The following morning, flowers arrived at Maya’s clinic.
Her coworkers called him romantic.
Maya told no one what happened.
That became the pattern.
A cruel remark.
A blocked doorway.
A hand around her wrist.
Then flowers, apologies and promises.
Rebecca reinforced every cycle.
“A strong marriage requires privacy,” she said. “Your mother doesn’t need to hear about every disagreement.”
Maya gradually stopped calling Elena.
She was ashamed.
She also feared Elena would demand that she leave before Maya was ready.
But Elena noticed the silence.
She noticed Maya’s long sleeves during warm weather.
She noticed David answering questions meant for his wife.
Then, two weeks before the restaurant dinner, Elena received an anonymous envelope.
Inside was a copy of a loan application bearing Maya’s signature.
