Chapter 13 - HER FATHER’S WARNING
Maya opened the letter in Charles’s office.
Her father’s handwriting was uneven from the illness that had weakened him.
My dearest Maya,
If you are reading this, someone connected to the Langford family has tried to gain control of the trust.
Years ago, Samuel explained, Langford Dining Group leased its first major restaurant from Bennett Properties.
David’s late father managed the company then.
Rebecca handled the finances.
Samuel discovered inflated renovation invoices and missing rent payments.
Rather than prosecute immediately, he negotiated repayment to protect hundreds of employees.
He believed the matter had ended.
Then he learned Rebecca had created new companies to hide additional debts.
Samuel quietly changed the trust.
No Langford family member could receive voting authority.
Any attempt to obtain control through fraud, coercion or marriage would trigger a full independent audit.
The letter continued:
You may love someone from that family. Love is not evidence of guilt. Judge people by their choices, not their names.
But never sign away your voice because someone tells you peace requires obedience.
Maya covered her mouth.
Her father had not ordered her to avoid David.
He had trusted her to recognize the truth herself.
At the end of the letter, Samuel named one final asset.
The land and building beneath the Bellweather restaurant belonged entirely to Maya’s trust.
The Langfords owned the restaurant business.
They did not own the place where David assaulted her.
They had humiliated Maya inside a building she legally controlled.
More importantly, the lease contained a fraud clause.
The missing rent, forged records and criminal activity allowed the trust to terminate Langford Dining Group’s lease immediately.
