Chapter 17 - REBECCA’S FINAL LIE
“Your mother knew David was dangerous,” Rebecca said.
Elena remained silent.
Rebecca turned to Maya.
“She could have stopped the wedding.”
Maya felt the accusation strike exactly where Rebecca intended.
“What do you mean?”
“Samuel warned her about our family. Elena had the letter.”
Charles immediately interrupted.
“The letter was sealed under legal instruction.”
“But she knew there were concerns,” Rebecca said. “She let you marry him anyway.”
Elena’s face filled with pain.
“I knew Samuel had investigated business irregularities involving David’s parents. I did not know David would abuse Maya.”
“You suspected,” Rebecca pressed.
“Yes,” Elena said. “After the marriage, I suspected something was wrong. I asked questions. Maya defended him. I was afraid forcing her to choose would push her farther away.”
Rebecca smiled faintly.
“Then blame your mother too.”
Maya looked at Elena.
For one painful moment, all the missed calls and unspoken fears stood between them.
Then Maya remembered who had placed the phone on the restaurant table.
Who had called 911 despite every threat.
Who had sat beside her in the hospital without demanding forgiveness.
“My mother made mistakes,” Maya said.
Elena lowered her eyes.
“But her mistakes came from fear.”
Maya turned back to Rebecca.
“Yours came from greed.”
Rebecca’s smile vanished.
“You think Elena saved you?”
“She stood up when you expected her to stay seated.”
Maya ended the meeting.
Outside, Elena began to apologize.
Maya stopped her.
“We’re going to talk about everything. Not today. Not because Rebecca demands it. But we’re not letting silence live between us anymore.”
Elena nodded through tears.
For the first time, their relationship was not built on protection or avoidance.
It was built on truth.
Days later, David unexpectedly changed his plea.
He admitted to the financial crimes but still claimed the assault had been accidental.
