Chapter 11 - DAVID’S REAL VOICE
The hard drive contained backups from David’s office computer.
Most files were business records.
One folder was labeled PERSONAL.
Inside were audio recordings of meetings between David and Rebecca.
David had recorded them to protect himself if the company collapsed.
Instead, the recordings exposed both of them.
In one conversation, Rebecca discussed Maya’s trust.
“She turns thirty in October,” Rebecca said. “Once the voting rights transfer, we need her signature before Avery explains what she controls.”
David replied, “She avoids business. She’ll sign if I tell her employees will suffer.”
“And if she asks questions?”
“I’ll remind her that her mother’s reputation depends on silence.”
Another recording was dated six weeks before the assault.
David sounded nervous.
“What if she leaves?”
Rebecca laughed.
“Maya won’t leave. You trained her to believe disagreement is betrayal.”
Maya paused the recording.
The word trained made her feel physically ill.
Elena reached for her, but Maya shook her head.
“I need to hear it.”
The final recording was made on the afternoon of the restaurant dinner.
David said he did not want to pressure Maya in public.
Rebecca responded, “Public is exactly where she’ll cooperate. Elena will never call the police with half the city watching.”
David asked, “And if Maya refuses?”
Rebecca’s answer was calm.
“Make her understand that marriage has consequences.”
The recordings proved the dinner had been planned as an act of coercion.
They also revealed that the false records about Samuel Bennett had been created by Rebecca.
Her goal was not only to silence Elena.
She wanted to make Maya doubt the father whose trust protected her.
But one file was encrypted.
Its title contained only an address.
