Chapter 5 - THE FORGED SIGNATURE
Elena took the loan application to Charles Avery, the attorney who had managed Samuel Bennett’s trust for twenty years.
Charles examined the document beneath a magnifying lamp.
“This signature was copied,” he said.
The application requested a $6.2 million commercial loan.
Collateral included three Bennett properties.
One of them housed the Bellweather restaurant.
“Can David pledge those buildings?” Elena asked.
“No. Only Maya can authorize that after her thirtieth birthday.”
“Then why would a bank process this?”
“They haven’t approved it. The application is waiting for spousal consent and confirmation from the trust.”
Elena looked at the attached corporate records.
Langford Dining Group was listed as the borrower.
David had signed as chief operating officer.
Rebecca had signed as company president.
“They’re planning to make Maya approve it,” Elena said.
Charles nodded.
“If she refuses, the loan collapses.”
“What happens then?”
He opened another file.
The Langfords owed millions in rent, vendor bills and private loans.
Two creditors were already preparing lawsuits.
Without immediate funding, the company could enter bankruptcy.
Elena wanted to call Maya immediately.
Charles stopped her.
“If David has access to her phone or email, warning her carelessly may place her in more danger.”
Elena’s stomach tightened.
She hated that he was right.
They began quietly collecting records.
Charles contacted the bank’s fraud department.
Elena saved every message Rebecca had sent about the upcoming dinner.
But before Elena could decide how to approach Maya, her daughter called unexpectedly.
“Mom, are you free Friday?”
Elena heard strain beneath her voice.
“Of course.”
“David’s family wants us to have dinner.”
“At the Bellweather?”
Maya went silent.
“How did you know?”
Elena closed her eyes.
Because the Bellweather was not simply another restaurant.
It stood on land owned by Maya’s trust.
