Chapter 6 - THE AGREEMENT UNDER THE PLATE
On Friday evening, Rebecca reserved the Bellweather’s most visible table.
She claimed the private rooms felt “too secretive.”
In reality, she believed public attention would control Elena.
Elena was a respected former school superintendent. She had spent thirty years protecting her reputation.
Rebecca assumed she would never create a scene in a crowded restaurant.
David also believed Maya would be too humiliated to resist him in public.
When Maya arrived, an envelope rested beneath her plate.
“What is this?” she asked.
“A simple family agreement,” Rebecca replied.
Maya opened it.
The first page transferred her voting authority in the Bennett Family Trust to David for ten years.
The second authorized the commercial loan.
The third allowed Langford Dining Group to use the trust properties as collateral.
Maya looked at David.
“You already submitted a loan application.”
“It was preliminary.”
“You copied my signature.”
“I authorized the paperwork to save time.”
“That is forgery.”
Rebecca calmly sipped her wine.
“Lower your voice.”
Elena placed one hand over the documents.
“Do not sign anything.”
David glared at her.
“This doesn’t concern you.”
“My daughter’s property concerns her. Her safety concerns me.”
Rebecca leaned toward Maya.
“If you refuse, hundreds of employees may lose their jobs.”
“You hid millions in debt from me.”
“We protected you from details you wouldn’t understand.”
Maya pushed the agreement away.
“No.”
David’s jaw tightened.
Rebecca gave him a small, deliberate nod.
“Take your wife somewhere private,” she said.
Maya stood.
“I’m leaving with my mother.”
David caught her arm.
Elena raised her phone.
“Release her.”
Customers began looking toward them.
David noticed.
Instead of calming down, public attention made him furious.
He believed Maya had made him appear weak.
Then she said the sentence Rebecca had taught him to fear.
“I’m calling Charles Avery on Monday, and I’m ordering a full audit.”
