Chapter 8 - THE NIGHT MAYA LEFT
At the hospital, a nurse photographed Maya’s injuries.
Several sections of hair had been torn from her scalp.
Her wrist was bruised from David’s grip.
The physician documented everything.
Elena remained beside the bed.
She did not tell Maya to stop crying.
She did not say she had warned her.
She simply held her daughter’s hand.
After midnight, Maya finally asked, “What did David mean about your secrets?”
Elena looked toward the closed door.
“Rebecca threatened me.”
“With what?”
“Your father.”
Months earlier, Rebecca had sent Elena copies of accounting records suggesting Samuel had accepted illegal payments from Langford Dining Group.
She threatened to release them publicly if Elena interfered in the marriage.
“She said Dad was corrupt?”
“She said the documents would destroy his name and damage the foundation he left to you.”
“Did you believe her?”
“No. But I needed proof.”
Maya pulled her hand away.
“You should have told me.”
“I know.”
“I thought you stopped fighting for me.”
Elena’s eyes filled.
“I was gathering evidence because I feared David would isolate you completely if I confronted him without it.”
“You let me stay there.”
“You kept telling me you were safe.”
“I was ashamed.”
“And I was afraid pushing too hard would make you disappear.”
The truth hurt both of them.
Elena showed Maya the forged loan application and Langford debt records.
Then she handed her the envelope from the restaurant.
Maya read the agreement slowly.
David had not wanted partnership.
He wanted legal control over everything Samuel left her.
Maya began shaking again.
“He married me for the properties.”
“I don’t know what he felt in the beginning,” Elena said. “But I know what he chose to become.”
A police officer entered with an update.
David had been booked for domestic assault.
Rebecca had not been arrested.
Before leaving the restaurant, however, she had demanded access to the security room.
When Marcus refused, she offered him fifty thousand dollars to erase the footage.
