Chapter 18 - MAYA TAKES THE STAND
The courtroom was full when Maya testified.
David sat at the defense table.
He did not look at her.
Maya described the first time he gripped her wrist.
The flowers that followed.
The changed passwords.
The way Rebecca taught her to view obedience as love.
Then prosecutors played the Bellweather footage.
On the large courtroom screen, David’s hand closed around Maya’s hair.
His voice filled the room.
Stay down.
Maya did not look away.
David did.
His attorney argued that the incident lasted only seconds.
Maya answered quietly.
“The violence lasted seconds. The fear that created it lasted years.”
Marcus testified next.
Leah described Rebecca smiling while Maya cried.
Elena explained the forged loan and the threats against Samuel’s reputation.
Charles presented the trust records.
Financial investigators traced stolen rent through Rebecca’s shell companies.
Finally, the prosecutor played the recording made before dinner.
If she refuses, don’t let her walk away.
David’s claim of an accident collapsed.
During a break, he asked to speak with prosecutors.
He changed his plea again.
This time, he admitted the assault was intentional.
He admitted he used violence to force Maya to sign.
Rebecca continued denying everything until her own recorded bribe was played.
The jury convicted her on the remaining charges.
At sentencing, David apologized.
But even then, he said pressure had changed him.
Maya stood to deliver her statement.
“Pressure did not pull my hair,” she said. “Pressure did not forge my name. Those were choices.”
David received a multiyear prison sentence followed by supervised release and a permanent protective order.
Rebecca received prison time and was ordered to surrender assets acquired through fraud.
Neither could contact Maya directly again.
