Chapter 3 - THE MAN SHE THOUGHT SHE MARRIED
Maya met David four years earlier at a children’s hospital fundraiser.
He was confident without seeming arrogant.
He remembered the names of every nurse he met.
When Maya mentioned that her father had recently died, David did not ask about the estate.
He asked what kind of man her father had been.
Maya told him Samuel Bennett had built commercial properties across the city but preferred repairing old radios in his garage.
David listened as though every detail mattered.
Six months later, he proposed beneath the oak tree where Maya’s parents had married.
Elena liked him at first.
“He looks at you as if you’re the only person in the room,” she said.
Rebecca was less welcoming.
At the engagement dinner, she examined Maya’s simple dress and asked whether she intended to keep working after marriage.
“Yes,” Maya replied.
Rebecca smiled thinly.
“David’s wife won’t need a salary.”
“I don’t work only for money.”
Rebecca’s eyes cooled.
After the wedding, David began making small requests.
He wanted Maya to leave the clinic earlier.
Then he complained that her coworkers depended on her too much.
He discouraged weekend visits with Elena because his mother felt excluded.
Each demand sounded reasonable when presented alone.
Together, they slowly reduced Maya’s world.
When Elena questioned the changes, Maya defended her husband.
“He’s under pressure,” she said.
David’s family operated Langford Dining Group, a once-famous chain of upscale restaurants.
Customers still saw chandeliers, private rooms and polished silver.
They did not see the unpaid vendors.
They did not know three locations were losing money.
Maya did not know either.
David told her the business was expanding.
Rebecca praised him constantly.
But six months before the Bellweather dinner, David’s affection changed.
He began asking when Maya would take full control of the Bennett Family Trust.
Maya’s thirtieth birthday was approaching.
