Chapter 9 - The Man Behind the MoneySenator Voss had presented Daniel with a medal two years earlier.

He had called him an American hero before a room filled with cameras.

Now federal agents traced stolen veterans’ funds into political consulting firms connected to Voss.

The scheme was simple.

Mercer Defense received inflated government contracts.

Caleb diverted part of the profit through false foundation projects.

The money then funded Voss’s private network.

In return, Voss protected Caleb’s control of the company.

Emily had discovered the pattern while reviewing a rejected housing request from a wounded soldier’s widow. The foundation claimed it had spent nearly four million dollars building homes in three states.

The homes did not exist.

Emily began collecting invoices.

That was when Margaret started monitoring her.

Sheriff Brooks called from the mountain.

They had found Dr. Hale alive in the hunting cabin.

He was unconscious, bound to a chair, and suffering from a fractured skull.

Beside him was a suitcase containing cash and a handwritten confession.

The confession blamed Caleb for everything.

Margaret had prepared it.

“She was going to let Hale die and frame Caleb,” Brooks said.

Daniel looked through the observation glass at his mother.

Margaret sat perfectly still in the interview room, unaware that Hale had survived.

For the first time, Daniel understood the full nature of her loyalty.

She had none.

Not to Caleb.

Not to her husband’s legacy.

Not even to the grandson she claimed to be protecting.

Everyone was useful until they became dangerous.

Colonel Hayes entered with worse news.

Federal agents had moved to arrest Senator Voss.

But Voss had already received a warning.

His private plane was preparing to leave the country.

“Who warned him?” Daniel asked.

Hayes showed him a hospital security image.

A man wearing medical scrubs had entered Emily’s floor twenty minutes earlier using a stolen badge.

He had not been seen leaving.

Daniel turned toward Emily’s room.

The door was partly open.

The guard assigned outside it was gone.

👉 The conspiracy had reached Emily’s hospital room—and Daniel realized the enemy was no longer trying to hide the truth, but to erase its last living witness.
