Chapter 8 - Caleb’s BargainDaniel met Caleb in a secured interview room.
A camera recorded every word.
Caleb looked exhausted. His expensive suit was wrinkled, and his hands shook without whiskey.
“I didn’t know she planned to kill Emily,” he said.
“You ordered the coffin.”
“Mother told me Emily had a terminal heart condition. She said Dr. Hale expected her to die during delivery.”
“And you believed that?”
“I believed what I needed to believe.”
Daniel leaned forward.
“You forged my father’s trust. You stole from wounded soldiers. You helped prepare an adoption before my son was born.”
Caleb looked away.
“Yes.”
The admission came so quietly that Daniel almost missed it.
“Why?”
“Because Mother spent my entire life telling me I was the real heir. Then your father died, and she showed me a trust that gave me everything.”
“You knew it was forged.”
“Not at first.”
“When did you learn?”
Caleb’s mouth tightened.
“Two years later.”
“And you kept taking the money.”
“Yes.”
Daniel sat back.
Caleb had not been an innocent son manipulated once.
He had chosen the lie every day afterward.
“Where is Dr. Hale?”
“Mother’s hunting cabin.”
Brooks, listening through an earpiece, immediately dispatched deputies.
Caleb continued.
“Hale panicked after Emily’s pulse returned briefly. He wanted to call an ambulance. Mother refused. They argued at the airstrip.”
“Whose blood was in the car?”
“Hale’s. Mother struck him with a tire iron.”
Daniel’s jaw clenched.
“Is he alive?”
“He was when I left.”
“Why didn’t you help him?”
Caleb’s eyes filled with shame.
“Because Mother said if we were caught, she would tell the police it was all my plan.”
Daniel stared at the man he once called brother.
“What do you want in exchange for this?”
“Protection.”
“From Mother?”
Caleb shook his head.
“From the people behind the shell companies. The stolen foundation money wasn’t staying with us. Most of it went to someone else.”
He wrote a name on a sheet of paper and pushed it across the table.
Daniel recognized it immediately.
Senator Richard Voss.
Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Procurement Committee.
