Chapter 11 - The Attorney’s Second KeyWhitmore froze when Emily looked at him.

Daniel stepped between them.
“What did you do?”
Whitmore raised both hands.
“Nothing to her.”
Emily’s voice was weak but clear.
“He gave Margaret my location.”
Whitmore’s face collapsed.
Daniel grabbed the front of his coat.
“You told my mother where Emily was hiding evidence?”
“She already knew Emily had contacted me,” Whitmore said. “Margaret threatened my daughter again.”
“You said the evidence against your daughter was manufactured.”
“It was. But Voss had people who could make it real.”
Emily closed her eyes, gathering strength.
“He gave me the key,” she whispered. “But he kept the second one.”
Daniel looked at the silver key.
Whitmore slowly reached into his pocket and produced an identical key.
“The vault requires both,” he admitted.
“Where is it?”
“Under the original Mercer textile mill.”
The abandoned mill had belonged to Daniel’s grandfather. It sat forty miles outside the city and had been closed for decades.
“What’s inside?” Brooks asked.
Whitmore looked at Emily.
“Thomas Mercer’s private archive. Original ledgers. Recorded board meetings. Proof that Voss began influencing the company before Thomas died.”
Daniel’s attention sharpened.
“My father’s death was ruled a heart attack.”
Whitmore said nothing.
That silence answered too much.
Emily reached toward Daniel.
“I found a medication order signed the night your father died. Dr. Hale prescribed a drug that could trigger cardiac arrest.”
Daniel felt a cold rage spread through him.
Margaret had not begun with Emily.
She had done this before.
His father had discovered the fraud.
He had changed his trust to protect Daniel and future grandchildren.
Then he had died suddenly.
Whitmore began to cry.
“I knew Thomas suspected them. I knew he created the vault. But I was afraid.”
Daniel released him.
“Fear explains silence. It does not erase what your silence cost.”
Federal agents prepared to search the mill.
Whitmore warned them that the vault was protected by an old mechanical system. If the wrong door was opened first, an internal fire mechanism would destroy the archive.
Only Margaret knew the correct sequence.

And Margaret had just demanded immunity in exchange for it.
👉 The evidence that could prove Thomas Mercer was murdered lay behind a trap—and the only person who knew how to reach it was the woman accused of killing him.
