Chapter 14 - The Woman With the Stolen KeyRachel Whitmore was found at a hotel near the state line.
She did not resist arrest.
When officers opened her suitcase, they found the missing guardianship records, cash, and a new passport.
Rachel was thirty-two, a financial compliance officer who had once worked for Mercer Defense.
She asked to speak with Daniel and Emily together.
Emily was still hospitalized, so the conversation took place over a secure video call.
Rachel looked ashamed.
“Senator Voss contacted me six months ago,” she said. “He knew my father had helped Emily.”
“What was in the missing box?” Daniel asked.
“Psychological evaluations created while you were deployed. They were designed to make you appear violent, unstable, and incapable of raising a child.”
Daniel’s face hardened.
“I’ve never met those doctors.”
“They never evaluated you. The reports were fabricated.”
Emily understood first.
“If I died, Margaret would use the reports to become Noah’s guardian.”
Rachel nodded.
“Then she would control the voting trust.”
“Why take the box?” Daniel asked.
“Voss ordered me to destroy it. Those documents connect him directly to the plan.”
“Why didn’t you?”
Rachel looked into the camera.
“Because I saw Noah’s name.”
Her voice broke.
“My father spent years protecting me from Margaret’s threats. I told myself taking the box would keep him safe. But when I saw they were going to steal a newborn from his father, I couldn’t burn it.”
Rachel gave agents access to a hidden email account containing Voss’s instructions.
She also revealed that Margaret had arranged for Daniel to be kept overseas longer than scheduled.
Voss had pressured military contractors to delay Daniel’s transport home.
Colonel Hayes confirmed that Daniel’s original return order had been altered.
Daniel had not simply arrived later than expected.
They had tried to ensure Emily was buried before he came home.
The weather had disrupted their plan. A military transport became available unexpectedly, bringing Daniel back two days early.
That accident of timing had saved Emily’s life.
Or so they believed.
A doctor entered Emily’s room with new test results.
The paralytic had damaged her kidneys.
