Chapter 1 - The Coffin Beneath the Christmas TreeDaniel Mercer had survived eleven months in a war zone.

Nothing had prepared him for the open coffin in his mother’s living room.

He stood frozen beneath the cold yellow glow of the chandelier, still wearing the uniform he had traveled home in. Snow melted from his boots onto the marble floor. His military bag slipped from his shoulder and landed with a heavy thud.

Inside the coffin lay his wife.

Emily wore the dark green dress she had bought for their first Christmas together. Her brown hair rested neatly around her pale face. Her hands had been folded over her stomach as though someone had arranged her for a photograph.

“No,” Daniel whispered.

His knees struck the floor.

He reached into the coffin and closed both hands around Emily’s right hand. Her skin felt cold, but not as cold as he expected.

Margaret Mercer stood beside him in a black dress, dry-eyed and perfectly composed.

“She died in childbirth,” his mother said.

Daniel lifted his head sharply.

From the second floor came the weak cry of a newborn.

His son.

The child he had never held.

“Where is my son?”

Margaret’s expression tightened.

“He’s being cared for.”

Caleb, Daniel’s older half-brother, stood near the fireplace with a glass of whiskey. He stared into the flames instead of at the coffin.

Daniel looked back at Emily.

Her fingers were curled tightly against her palm.

Too tightly.

He had seen bodies before. He knew what death did to muscles. Something about Emily’s hand did not look natural.

Slowly, he worked his thumb beneath her fingers.

A small black memory card fell into his palm.

Margaret stepped forward.

Caleb’s glass stopped halfway to his mouth.

“What is she holding?” Daniel asked.

“It’s nothing,” Caleb answered too quickly.

Daniel rose.

He looked at the memory card, then at his mother.

“Choose your next words carefully.”

The baby cried again upstairs.

This time, Daniel heard something else beneath the sound.

A woman’s muffled voice ordering someone not to open the nursery door.

👉 Daniel had returned home expecting to meet his son—but the locked room upstairs was about to reveal that the coffin was only the beginning.
