Chapter 19 - The VerdictMargaret Mercer entered court in a dark suit.
She never looked at Caleb.
She never looked at Dr. Hale.
She looked only at Daniel.
The trial lasted seven weeks.
Prosecutors played Thomas Mercer’s final recording.
They showed the false trust, the adoption papers, the forged psychological reports, and Emily’s videos.
The jury saw photographs of Emily in the coffin.
They heard her describe being conscious but unable to move while Margaret discussed burying her before Daniel returned.
Several jurors cried.
Margaret testified in her own defense.
She blamed Caleb.
She blamed Hale.
She blamed Voss.
Finally, she blamed Emily.
“She entered my family and turned my son against me.”
The prosecutor asked one final question.
“Mrs. Mercer, when Captain Mercer found his wife alive, why did you try to stop him from checking her pulse?”
Margaret had no answer.
The jury deliberated for less than five hours.
Guilty on every major count.
Margaret received life in prison without the possibility of parole for Thomas’s murder, plus consecutive sentences for the attempted murders and conspiracy.
Senator Voss received forty-eight years in federal prison.
Caleb was sentenced to fourteen years after his cooperation was considered.
Dr. Hale received twenty-two years and permanently lost his medical license.
Daniel was permitted to give a victim impact statement.
He stood beside Emily.
“My mother believed love made people weak,” he said. “She believed loyalty could be purchased and family could be controlled through fear.”
He looked directly at Margaret.
“She was wrong.”
Margaret’s eyes filled with tears for the first time.
Daniel did not know whether they came from remorse or self-pity.
It no longer mattered.
“You took my father,” he continued. “You nearly took my wife. You tried to take my son. But you will not take the life we build after this.”
When court ended, Daniel walked outside carrying Noah.
Emily stayed close beside him.
Snow had begun to fall.
The same kind of snow that had covered Mercer House on the night Daniel came home.
