During the darkness, a fire alarm sounded on Emily’s floor.
Daniel had anticipated a distraction.
He had asked Hayes to place military investigators at both stairwells and an armed deputy outside Emily’s room.
A woman disguised as a hospital technician was caught carrying a stolen access badge and a vial of sedative.
She worked for Margaret’s private security company.
Margaret had arranged the attempt through a coded call with her attorney.
The call had been recorded.
This time, there was no performance left.
When Daniel confronted her in the secured hospital corridor, Margaret looked older than she had the night before.
“They will take everything,” she said.
“They should.”
“The company. The house. Your father’s name.”
“My father’s name survived you.”
Margaret’s mouth trembled.
“I did it for my sons.”
“You tried to frame Caleb.”
“He disappointed me.”
“You tried to steal Noah.”
“He would have belonged to the family.”
“He belongs to no one.”
Daniel stepped closer.
“He is our son. He will grow up free of you.”
Margaret stared at him as though he had struck her.
“I’m your mother.”
“A mother protects her child when protection costs her something. You sacrificed everyone else to protect yourself.”
Deputies moved to escort her away.
Margaret looked through the glass panel in Emily’s door.
Emily was awake, holding Noah.
Daniel stood beside her.
For one brief second, Margaret seemed to understand what she had destroyed.
Then the expression vanished beneath resentment.
“You will regret choosing her over blood,” she said.
Daniel answered calmly.
“Emily and Noah are my blood. You are simply the person who taught me that blood without love means nothing.”
Margaret was returned to jail under federal supervision.
Hours later, Dr. Hale regained consciousness.
He asked to confess.
