Chapter 10 - The Intruder in the ICUDaniel ran.

Inside Emily’s room, a man in blue scrubs stood beside her IV pump.
His hand held a syringe.
Daniel crossed the distance in three strides.
He seized the man’s wrist, twisted it away from the IV line, and drove him against the wall with controlled force.
The syringe fell.
The intruder reached beneath his shirt.
Daniel trapped his arm before he could draw the concealed pistol.
Two hospital guards rushed in.
Together, they forced the man to the floor.
Noah began crying in the adjoining room.
Daniel looked toward the baby, then back at Emily’s monitor.
Her heartbeat remained steady.
The syringe contained concentrated potassium chloride.
Enough to stop her heart and make the death appear medically plausible.
The intruder refused to speak, but federal agents identified him as a former security contractor employed by one of Voss’s consulting companies.
Senator Voss’s plane was stopped moments before takeoff.
He was arrested on the runway.
Yet Daniel felt no relief.
Emily still had not awakened.
He sat beside her again after the room was cleared.
“I found Noah,” he whispered. “He has your nose.”
Her fingers did not move.
“I found the files. I know what they did.”
Nothing.
Daniel lowered his head.
“I should have listened when your messages stopped. I should have known you would never disappear without fighting.”
A tear fell onto Emily’s hand.
Then her index finger moved.
Barely.
Daniel straightened.
“Emily?”
Her eyelids fluttered.
The monitor quickened.
A nurse called the doctor.
Emily struggled to breathe around the oxygen tube. Her eyes opened halfway, unfocused at first.
Then she saw Daniel.
Fear crossed her face.
She gripped his sleeve with surprising strength.
“Noah,” she whispered.
“He’s safe.”
Her eyes filled with tears.
Emily tried to speak again.
Daniel leaned close.
“Margaret…” she breathed. “She didn’t work alone.”
“We know about Caleb and Voss.”
Emily shook her head weakly.
“No. Someone else.”
Her gaze moved toward the hallway.
Toward a respected family attorney who had just arrived carrying Thomas Mercer’s original records.

Charles Whitmore.
👉 Emily had finally awakened—but the first person she feared was the man who claimed he had helped her uncover the truth.
