Chapter 3 - The Pulse No One CheckedDaniel returned to the coffin.

This time, he did not kneel as a grieving husband.

He approached as a soldier trained to notice what others missed.

Emily’s lips were pale, but not blue. There was no visible embalming incision. No chemical odor. No hospital identification band.

He pressed two fingers against the side of her neck.

Margaret grabbed his shoulder.

“Stop this.”

Daniel threw her hand off.

For ten seconds, he felt nothing.

Then—

A faint flutter.

So weak he almost imagined it.

Daniel lowered his ear near Emily’s mouth.

A shallow breath brushed his cheek.

“She’s alive.”

Caleb dropped his whiskey glass.

It shattered across the floor.

Margaret stared at the coffin.

“That’s impossible.”

Daniel did not ask why his mother sounded frightened instead of relieved.

He lifted Emily into his arms.

Her head fell against his shoulder.

“Call an ambulance!” he shouted.

The nurse ran for her phone.

Caleb moved toward the front door.

Daniel blocked him.

“You’re not leaving.”

“I’m getting help.”

“You had a phone in your hand all night.”

Sirens sounded in the distance.

Margaret stepped backward until she struck the edge of a table.

Daniel looked down at his wife.

There was a small puncture mark inside her left elbow. Another mark hid behind her ear.

He had seen similar injection sites during field extractions.

Someone had drugged her.

The front doors opened.

Paramedics rushed in, followed by two sheriff’s deputies.

As Emily was placed on a stretcher, one paramedic checked her pupils.

“Severe respiratory suppression,” he said. “Possible sedative overdose.”

Margaret gripped the back of a chair.

“She was pronounced dead at St. Catherine’s.”

“By whom?” Daniel demanded.

Caleb finally spoke.

“Dr. Hale.”

Daniel knew the name.

Dr. Victor Hale had delivered every Mercer child for three decades. He had also served on the board of the Mercer Family Foundation with Margaret and Caleb.

The paramedics rushed Emily outside.

Daniel followed, but a deputy stopped him long enough to ask what had happened.

Daniel held up the memory card.

“I think my wife tried to leave me an answer.”

From the driveway, a paramedic shouted.

“Captain, you need to come now!”

Emily’s heart rhythm had suddenly begun to collapse.

👉 Emily had survived the coffin—but unless Daniel uncovered what was in her bloodstream, she might die before she could name the person who put her there.
