Chapter 13 - The Vault Beneath the MillSnow covered the abandoned Mercer mill when Daniel arrived with federal agents.

The building smelled of rust, wet timber, and old machinery.
Beneath the main floor, they found a steel door hidden behind a brick wall.
Daniel and Whitmore inserted the two silver keys.
Four brass levers waited inside a recessed panel.
Emily had remembered the melody:
Second.
Fourth.
First.
Third.
Daniel pulled the levers in that order.
For several seconds, nothing happened.
Then the lock released.
Inside were shelves of documents, sealed evidence boxes, audio tapes, and a handwritten letter addressed to Daniel.
The federal agents began photographing everything.
Daniel opened the letter.
Son,
If you are reading this, I failed to stop people I once trusted. Do not let anger make you like them. Protect the innocent first. Then pursue the truth without mercy and without cruelty.
Daniel’s vision blurred.
The archive contained proof that Thomas Mercer had discovered Voss’s kickback operation. He had scheduled a board meeting to remove Caleb and report Margaret.
He died the night before that meeting.
A hidden audio recorder captured his final conversation with Margaret.
Thomas’s voice sounded tired.
“You used Caleb because you knew Daniel would never choose money over duty.”
Margaret replied, “Daniel would give the company to strangers.”
“They are not strangers. They are the men who built it and the families who paid for it.”
Then came the sound of a glass being set down.
Margaret said, “You should rest.”
Thomas asked, “What did you put in my drink?”
The recording ended with a chair falling.
Daniel closed his eyes.
His mother had murdered his father.
Another file contained Dr. Hale’s payment records and the prescription order used that night.
The case was complete.
But an agent suddenly called from the far end of the vault.
A shelf had been emptied recently.
The missing box was labeled:
GUARDIANSHIP—DANIEL MERCER.
Someone had removed records concerning Daniel’s mental fitness and legal custody rights.
The digital access log showed the vault had been opened three days earlier.
Using Whitmore’s key.
Whitmore insisted he had not been there.
Then security footage revealed who had used it.
May you like
His daughter, Rachel.
👉 The vault proved Margaret murdered Thomas—but the missing guardianship file suggested someone was still trying to take Noah away from Daniel.
