Chapter 5 - The Doctor Who Signed the Death CertificateSheriff Elena Brooks arrived at the hospital before midnight.
She was a calm woman in her fifties who had known the Mercer family for years, but she showed Margaret no special treatment.
“Dr. Hale signed Emily’s death certificate at 6:42 this morning,” Brooks told Daniel. “There was no autopsy request.”
“Why not?”
“Your mother claimed the family wanted a private burial before Christmas.”
Daniel stared at her.
“Emily supposedly died this morning, and there was already a coffin in the house tonight?”
Brooks nodded.
“The funeral home says Caleb ordered it two weeks ago.”
Hayes slowly closed the laptop.
“That means this was planned before the birth.”
Daniel felt the room tilt around him.
His mother had ordered his wife’s coffin while Emily was still alive.
Brooks sent deputies to find Dr. Hale.
His clinic was empty.
His house was empty.
His passport and car were gone.
Caleb and Margaret were placed in separate interview rooms at the sheriff’s department, but neither spoke without an attorney.
Daniel remained at the hospital.
Just before dawn, Emily’s condition stabilized.
The doctor explained that her body had been weakened by childbirth, blood loss, and hours of respiratory suppression. She might wake within hours.
Or she might never wake at all.
Daniel sat beside her bed with Noah sleeping against his chest.
“I should have been here,” he whispered.
He had called Emily every night from overseas until communication lines were disrupted during his final mission. For three weeks, he had received no messages from her.
Margaret had told him Emily was exhausted and resting.
Caleb had sent photographs of a smiling Emily.
Now Daniel realized the photographs had all been taken months earlier.
His phone rang.
Sheriff Brooks.
“We found Dr. Hale’s car at a private airstrip.”
“Was he on the plane?”
“No. The plane never left.”
“Then where is he?”
Brooks paused.
“We found blood in the driver’s seat.”
Daniel looked through the glass wall of Emily’s room.
Someone had silenced the doctor who knew how Emily had been declared dead.
