Chapter 6 - The Message Hidden in the CryingNoah began crying shortly after sunrise.
It was not hunger.
Daniel checked his diaper, held him against his shoulder, and walked slowly around the hospital room.
The baby kept turning his head toward Emily’s overnight bag.
A nurse opened it.
Inside were baby clothes, a journal, a small silver key, and a stuffed bear with one seam recently stitched by hand.
Daniel cut the thread carefully.
A tiny voice recorder was hidden inside.
The last recording had been made during Emily’s labor.
Her breathing came fast and uneven.
Dr. Hale’s voice spoke first.
“You need to stop asking questions.”
Emily answered through the pain.
“I sent everything to Daniel.”
Margaret’s voice followed.
“No, you didn’t. Caleb shut down your access.”
“You can steal money,” Emily said. “You can forge signatures. But you cannot change who Noah is.”
A sharp silence followed.
Then Caleb spoke.
“What did she mean by that?”
Margaret ordered everyone out except Dr. Hale.
The recording became muffled, as though Emily had hidden the bear under a blanket.
Margaret leaned close enough for every word to be clear.
“Your husband’s father created a bloodline clause. Daniel’s first legitimate child receives controlling ownership of Mercer Defense Holdings when he turns twenty-five. Until then, the child’s legal guardian controls the voting trust.”
Emily’s voice weakened.
“You wanted my baby.”
“I wanted stability.”
“You wanted his inheritance.”
Margaret’s tone turned cold.
“Daniel was always too much like his father. He would give everything away to soldiers and strangers. Caleb understands power.”
A door opened.
Dr. Hale returned.
Margaret said, “Do it after the baby is delivered.”
The recording ended with Emily whispering only four words.
“Daniel, protect our son.”
Daniel stood motionless.
It was not merely money.
Margaret planned to remove Emily, declare Daniel emotionally unfit after his deployment, and make herself Noah’s guardian.
Through Noah, she would control the company.
Hayes entered with another discovery.
The military cyber unit had traced the blocked messages from Emily.
They had not been interrupted by the war zone.
They had been intercepted inside Mercer House.
Someone had used Daniel’s own encrypted family account.
Only three people had access.
Daniel.
Margaret.
