Chapter 12 - Margaret’s Last PerformanceMargaret entered the interview room wearing the expression she used at charity galas.

Controlled.

Elegant.

Untouchable.

“I will give you access to the archive,” she said, “in exchange for full immunity.”

Sheriff Brooks did not react.

“You’re facing attempted murder, conspiracy, kidnapping, fraud, and possibly homicide.”

“You have suspicion. Not proof.”

Daniel watched from behind the glass.

Margaret continued.

“Caleb is weak. Hale is unstable. Whitmore is a coward. Every one of them will say whatever keeps them out of prison.”

The federal prosecutor asked, “And Emily?”

Margaret smiled faintly.

“A traumatized woman recovering from childbirth and an overdose.”

Daniel entered the room before anyone could stop him.

Margaret’s eyes moved to his uniform.

“You always did enjoy dramatic entrances.”

“You put my wife in a coffin.”

“You were meant to believe she died peacefully.”

“You locked my son upstairs beside adoption papers.”

“I was securing his future.”

Daniel placed the memory card on the table.

“Emily secured yours.”

For the first time, Margaret’s gaze dropped.

Daniel leaned closer.

“You taught me that the Mercer name meant duty. You told me Father built the company to protect this country. All the while, you were stealing from the families of men who served beside me.”

Margaret’s composure cracked.

“Your father would have destroyed everything.”

“He tried to stop you.”

“He was going to give the company away!”

“He was going to return what you stole.”

Margaret struck the table with her palm.

“I saved this family!”

Daniel looked at her without emotion.

“No. You hollowed it out and called the emptiness power.”

He turned to leave.

Margaret called after him.

“You cannot open the vault without me.”

Emily’s voice came through a speaker from the adjoining observation room.

“Yes, we can.”

Everyone looked toward the glass.

Emily had remembered the sequence.

Thomas Mercer had hidden it in a Christmas song he used to play for Daniel as a child.

Four notes.

Four numbered levers.

The vault could be opened without Margaret.
