Chapter 15 - The Fight Emily Had LeftEmily’s kidneys began to fail that night.

Daniel sat beside her while doctors prepared emergency dialysis.

“I’m tired,” she whispered.

He took her hand.

“You can rest.”

“No.” Her eyes filled with fear. “I mean I’m tired of fighting them.”

Daniel leaned closer.

“You don’t have to fight them anymore.”

“What if they take Noah?”

“They won’t.”

“What if the company destroys you?”

“Then I’ll lose the company.”

Emily searched his face.

“Your father wanted you to protect it.”

“My father wanted me to protect people. A company is only worth saving if it does that.”

For the first time since waking, Emily smiled.

Weakly.

But truly.

Noah was brought to her before treatment began.

She held him against her chest and cried silently.

Daniel wrapped one arm around both of them.

For a few minutes, there were no investigators, no crimes, no Mercer empire.

Only a mother, a father, and the baby who had survived the plan built around him.

Emily kissed Noah’s forehead.

“I hid the card after they drugged me,” she told Daniel. “I could still hear them, but I couldn’t move.”

Daniel’s throat tightened.

“Margaret told Hale to close my hand around a rosary,” Emily continued. “When they left the room, I forced my fingers around the card instead.”

“You were awake?”

“Part of the time.”

“In the coffin?”

A tear slipped down her cheek.

“I heard Noah crying upstairs.”

Daniel lowered his head to her hand.

“I’m sorry.”

“You came.”

“Almost too late.”

“But you came.”

The treatment began.

For six hours, Daniel remained beside her.

At dawn, her kidney function improved slightly.

The doctors were cautiously hopeful.

Then Sheriff Brooks arrived with news from the jail.

Margaret had collapsed in her cell.

She claimed chest pain.

An ambulance was taking her to the same hospital.

Daniel immediately understood.
