Chapter 8 - THE DAY THE DOOR OPENED

Lily instructed the concierge not to let Margaret upstairs.

For twenty minutes, nothing happened.

Then the apartment door unlocked.

Margaret stepped inside using a building master key.

The concierge followed behind her, visibly uncomfortable.

“Mrs. Cole said you might be experiencing a medical crisis,” he explained.

“I told you not to let her in.”

Margaret placed one hand on his arm.

“She’s emotional. I’ll handle this.”

Lily looked directly at the concierge.

“I want her removed.”

He hesitated.

Margaret was the building’s original lease guarantor. Her name remained on an old emergency authorization Adam had never updated.

“I’ll wait in the hall,” the concierge said.

Margaret closed the door behind him.

“You embarrassed me downstairs.”

“You lied to get inside.”

“I came to protect this family.”

“You came for the financial records.”

Margaret’s eyes moved toward Lily’s phone.

“Delete what you sent to Rachel.”

“No.”

“Sign the agreement.”

“No.”

Margaret approached.

Lily backed toward the bedroom.

“You think giving birth makes you powerful?” Margaret asked. “You married into this family three years ago.”

“And Thomas still trusted me more than you.”

Margaret froze.

Lily immediately knew she had touched the truth.

“What did Rachel tell you?”

“Enough.”

Margaret reached for the phone.

Lily pulled away.

The device struck the bedroom wall, cracking the screen.

Lily bent to retrieve it.

Margaret grabbed her wrist.

“Give it to me.”

“Let go.”

Lily twisted free, but a sudden pain tore across her stomach.

She gasped and caught the dresser.

The large wedding portrait shook above her.

Margaret reached for the phone again.

Lily raised one arm to protect herself.

The portrait fell.

Glass shattered across the floor.

Lily’s knees weakened.

Warm liquid ran down her legs.

Then she saw the dark stain spreading across her clothes.

“Call 911,” she whispered.

Margaret stared at the blood.

For a moment, genuine panic crossed her face.

She reached for her own phone.

Then her eyes moved toward Lily’s damaged phone.

“Unlock it first.”

Lily looked at her in disbelief.

“My baby is in danger.”

“Unlock the phone.”

👉 Margaret had one chance to save her granddaughter, but she chose the evidence over the child.
