Chapter 16 - THE DOCTOR WHO SOLD INFORMATION

The payment led investigators to Dr. Warren Hale, a private medical consultant who advised the Cole Foundation.
He was not Lily’s obstetrician.
But he had access to limited family insurance data through the foundation’s executive health program.
For six months, Hale had sent Margaret updates about Lily’s pregnancy.
Appointment dates.
Risk factors.
Estimated delivery window.
Even notes about the possibility of early labor.
Margaret paid him through one of the false charities.
When questioned, Hale claimed Margaret only wanted to prepare for the trust transfer.
Then investigators showed him the audio recording.
He changed his story.
Three weeks before Adam’s trip, Margaret asked what might happen if emergency treatment for placental separation were delayed.
Hale explained the danger.
She asked how quickly symptoms could become life-threatening.
He answered.
“Did she ask how to help Lily?” the detective demanded.
“No.”
“What did she ask?”
Hale looked down.
“She asked how long a pregnant woman might remain conscious.”
The room went silent.
Hale insisted he never believed Margaret would use the information.
But he had continued accepting money.
His medical access was suspended, and criminal charges followed.
Adam struggled to listen to the report.
His mother had not simply made a cruel decision during a moment of panic.
She had anticipated the possibility of Lily’s emergency.
She knew exactly what delayed care could do.
Lily listened from her hospital bed.
Instead of crying, she became very still.
“She knew,” Lily said.
Adam nodded.
“She knew.”
“She looked at the blood and asked for my passcode.”
Adam lowered his head.
“I’m sorry.”
“You didn’t do what she did.”
“I taught her there would be no consequences. Every time you warned me, I asked you to be patient.”
Lily looked at him for a long moment.
“I love you, Adam. But love cannot be the reason I pretend this didn’t change us.”
He accepted the words without defending himself.
“What do you need from me?”
“Truth. Even when it hurts you.”
“You’ll have it.”
“And space to decide whether I can trust you again.”
Adam’s eyes filled, but he nodded.
Lily was not punishing him.
She was refusing to make healing easy for the person who had failed to protect her.
Then a nurse entered from the NICU.
Rose’s oxygen levels had suddenly dropped.

Both parents ran toward their daughter.
👉 Margaret had been arrested, but the damage caused by those lost hours was still threatening the smallest life in the hospital.
