Chapter 12 - THE VOICE INSIDE THE CLOUD

A digital forensic specialist accessed Lily’s encrypted backup.

Most files were intact.

There were photographs of the trust records, copies of Margaret’s agreement, and the voicemail warning Lily against locking family out.

Then the specialist found an audio file.

It had started when Lily pressed the safety shortcut during Margaret’s confrontation.

The recording lasted twenty-three minutes.

Rachel, Adam, and the detective listened together.

Margaret’s voice filled the room.

DELETE WHAT YOU SENT TO RACHEL.

Lily refused.

Margaret demanded the passcode.

Then came the crash of the wedding portrait.

Lily cried out in pain.

CALL 911.

Margaret’s breathing became rapid.

UNLOCK THE PHONE FIRST.

Adam lowered his head.

The recording continued.

Lily begged for help.

Margaret ordered her into bed.

She said an ambulance would “create questions.”

Then came the words that changed the investigation.

“If that child is born tonight, the audit begins tonight.”

Lily answered through broken breaths.

“Is that all Rose is to you?”

Margaret replied, “She is the reason everything your husband’s father built will be taken from me.”

Adam stood abruptly.

His chair fell backward.

The detective stopped the recording.

“This establishes motive and knowledge of the emergency.”

Rachel looked sick.

But she asked the specialist to continue.

The final minutes captured Margaret searching Lily’s phone.

Then her voice became quieter.

“Thomas should never have chosen you.”

Lily sounded confused.

“Chosen me for what?”

Margaret did not answer.

The recording ended when the phone struck the floor.

Rachel stared at the computer.

Adam turned to her.

“What did my father choose Lily for?”

Rachel opened her briefcase.

“The trust provision naming the successor was sealed until your child was born.”

Rose had now survived birth.

The condition had been met.

Rachel removed an envelope bearing Thomas Cole’s signature.

“I can open this today.”

Inside the NICU, Rose’s monitor continued its fragile rhythm.
