Chapter 10 - ROSE’S FIRST NIGHT

Doctors delivered Rose by emergency cesarean section less than thirty minutes after Lily arrived at the hospital.

The baby was born silent.

Adam stood outside the operating room while medical staff moved with terrifying speed.

A nurse carried his daughter toward the neonatal team.

She was impossibly small.

Her skin looked gray beneath the bright hospital lights.

Then a weak cry escaped her.

Adam pressed both hands over his mouth.

Rose was alive.

But she could not breathe without help.

She was taken to the neonatal intensive care unit.

Lily remained in surgery because of severe blood loss.

Adam stood between two sets of locked doors.

His wife was fighting for her life behind one.

His daughter was connected to machines behind the other.

Margaret called repeatedly.

He ignored her.

The recording of their ambulance conversation remained saved on his phone.

SHE WAS FINE WHEN I LEFT.

The sentence played again in his mind.

A detective arrived after hospital staff reported a possible delayed emergency response.

Adam handed over Lily’s phone.

“The call history shows my mother answered.”

“Did your mother know Lily was bleeding?”

“She claims Lily was fine.”

“Was she inside the apartment?”

“She admitted leaving.”

The detective asked whether Margaret had any motive to prevent emergency care.

Adam almost said no.

Then he remembered the trust records Lily had sent him.

The missing money.

The agreement.

The argument he had minimized.

“My mother controls a family trust,” he said. “That control changes when my daughter is born.”

The detective’s eyes sharpened.

“How much money are we talking about?”

“More than two hundred million dollars.”

The answer sounded monstrous inside the hospital corridor.

Rachel arrived carrying the encrypted financial files.

“Margaret has been misappropriating funds,” she said. “A full audit began the moment Rose was born alive.”

Adam looked through the NICU window.

His daughter’s chest rose with the machine.

His mother had known exactly what the birth would trigger.

Then a surgeon emerged.

“Lily is stable for now, but the next twelve hours are critical.”

Adam pressed his palm against the glass.

“Can I see her?”

“Soon.”

The detective’s phone rang.

After listening, he turned toward Adam.
