By morning, stories about Lily appeared online.
Anonymous sources claimed she had suffered a pregnancy crisis after becoming “emotionally unstable.”
Another report accused her of using the birth of her child to seize control of the Cole fortune.
Photographs showed Margaret entering a church with red eyes.
She told reporters she was praying for her daughter-in-law.
“I love Lily,” she said. “Our family is deeply concerned about her mental health.”
Adam watched the interview from the NICU waiting room.
His hands curled into fists.
Margaret was building a public defense before Lily could speak.
Board members began calling.
Some urged Adam to delay the audit until the scandal quieted.
One suggested temporarily removing Lily as successor trustee because of her hospitalization.
Rachel rejected the suggestion.
“The trust explicitly states that physical illness does not equal incapacity.”
Then she discovered the source of the media leaks.
Margaret’s public-relations director had sent reporters selected medical information about Lily’s pregnancy.
The records were confidential.
Only someone with access to an old family insurance portal could have obtained them.
Margaret had used Adam’s childhood account credentials.
Adam publicly released a brief statement.
“My wife experienced a life-threatening emergency after help was deliberately delayed. She is not unstable. She is a survivor.”
He provided no additional details because the investigation remained active.
Margaret called him immediately.
“You have humiliated me.”
“You left Lily bleeding.”
“She refused to cooperate.”
“With what? Letting you erase thirty million dollars?”
Margaret became silent.
Adam continued.
“Police have the apartment recording.”
The silence changed.
For the first time, Margaret sounded afraid.
“What recording?”
“The one where you said the audit would begin if Rose was born.”
Margaret ended the call.
Minutes later, a cybersecurity alert reached Rachel.
Someone was attempting to access the trust’s overseas account archive using Margaret’s credentials.
The account was based in Switzerland.
The system blocked the first attempt.
The second came from a private terminal inside the Cole Foundation headquarters.
Margaret was there.
Police raced toward the building.
But when they arrived, Margaret’s office was empty.
Her computer remained logged in.
On the desk sat a one-way airline itinerary.
