Chapter 5 - THE DOCUMENT MARGARET NEEDED SIGNED
Margaret entered the apartment wearing a cream-colored suit and carrying white roses.
She kissed Lily’s cheek as though they were close.
“You look exhausted.”
“I’m fine.”
“You shouldn’t be alone.”
“I prefer being alone.”
Margaret smiled, but the warmth never reached her eyes.
She walked straight into the nursery.
On the desk lay the Cole Family Trust folder.
Lily had closed it, yet Margaret’s gaze settled on it immediately.
“What are you doing with those records?”
“Adam asked me to organize them.”
“My son has employees for that.”
“He trusts me.”
Margaret turned.
“Adam trusts everyone when he wants to avoid conflict.”
She placed the flowers beside the crib and removed a document from her handbag.
“I brought something practical.”
The paper was titled Temporary Administrative Continuity Agreement.
It would allow Margaret to retain full control of the trust for five additional years after the baby’s birth.
Lily read the first page twice.
“Why would Adam and I agree to this?”
“To protect the company while you recover.”
“This gives you authority over every account.”
“It prevents instability.”
“It prevents an audit.”
Margaret’s expression changed slightly.
“You have been looking where you don’t belong.”
“Four million dollars is missing.”
“No money is missing.”
“I traced it.”
Margaret closed the nursery door.
“Pregnancy has made you suspicious.”
“I saved the records.”
“Where?”
Lily did not answer.
Margaret stepped closer.
“You are about to become a mother. You should understand that sometimes women make difficult decisions to protect their children.”
“Is that what you call stealing from your son?”
Margaret’s face hardened.
“My husband built everything that family has.”
“Then why did his will reduce your control?”
For the first time, Margaret looked frightened.
Only for a second.
Then she gathered the documents and moved toward the door.
“Sign the agreement before Adam returns.”
“No.”
Margaret stopped.
“You should be very careful about forcing a man to choose between his mother and his wife.”
Lily met her eyes.
“Adam shouldn’t have to choose between truth and you.”
Margaret left the flowers behind.
When Lily checked the nursery desk, one page from the trust records was gone.
