Chapter 4 - THE MONEY THAT VANISHED
Before her pregnancy, Lily had worked as a forensic accountant.
She had left her firm temporarily after being placed on partial bed rest, but numbers still spoke to her more clearly than people did.
Adam had asked her to organize old records from the Cole Family Foundation before his upcoming board meeting.
Margaret had managed the foundation since Adam’s father, Thomas, died four years earlier.
At first, the missing funds looked like ordinary donations.
Payments had been sent to children’s charities, medical programs, and housing organizations.
But three charities shared the same mailing address.
The address belonged to a private office rented by Margaret.
Lily followed the transfers.
The money moved from the foundation to the charities, then to a consulting company called M. Cole Advisory.
Margaret had paid herself millions.
Lily printed the records and photographed every page.
She did not immediately call Adam.
He was boarding his flight, and she wanted to verify everything before accusing his mother.
Instead, she contacted Rachel Sloan, the attorney who had handled Thomas Cole’s estate.
Rachel agreed to meet her the next morning.
“Do not mention this to Margaret,” Rachel warned.
“Why?”
“Because the trust is about to change.”
Lily glanced toward the nursery.
“What does that mean?”
Rachel became careful.
“Thomas created a provision involving Adam’s first child. I cannot discuss the full terms until I confirm the pregnancy has reached the legal threshold defined in the trust.”
“That sounds strange.”
“Thomas had reasons.”
“Did he know Margaret was stealing?”
A long silence followed.
“He suspected financial misconduct shortly before his death.”
Lily pressed a hand against her stomach.
“Why didn’t anyone tell Adam?”
“Your husband was grieving, and Margaret controlled access to most of the records.”
Rachel asked Lily to send encrypted copies of everything.
Minutes after Lily completed the upload, the apartment intercom rang.
Margaret stood in the lobby holding flowers.
She had not called first.
Lily stared at the screen.
Then Margaret looked directly into the security camera and smiled.
