Chapter 7 - THOMAS COLE’S HIDDEN CLAUSE
The next morning, Rachel met Lily in a private conference room near the hospital.
She brought a sealed copy of Thomas Cole’s trust.
“Thomas amended this six weeks before his death,” Rachel explained.
“He believed Margaret had begun moving foundation money without authorization.”
“Why didn’t he remove her?”
“He planned to. He died before the full board could meet.”
Thomas had been recovering from heart surgery when he discovered irregular transfers.
Margaret claimed he was confused from medication.
Several board members believed her.
Thomas realized a public fight could leave Adam trapped between his parents, so he created a delayed safeguard.
Margaret would remain temporary trustee.
But when Adam’s first child was born, control would automatically transfer to Adam and an independent successor trustee.
A complete forensic audit would then begin.
“Who is the successor trustee?” Lily asked.
Rachel did not answer.
“That portion is still sealed under Thomas’s instructions.”
“Why?”
“He wanted to prevent pressure or manipulation before the child’s birth.”
Lily thought about Margaret’s agreement.
“She wants five more years because the audit begins when Rose is born.”
“Yes.”
“And if Adam signs?”
“The agreement could delay the transfer while it is challenged.”
Lily placed both hands over her stomach.
“Does Margaret know who the successor trustee is?”
“She knows it isn’t her.”
Rachel then revealed something worse.
Two days earlier, Margaret had asked a private medical consultant whether severe pregnancy complications could delay activation of the trust.
Lily stared at her.
“She asked about my baby?”
“She claimed she was planning for every possible outcome.”
“What happens if Rose doesn’t survive?”
Rachel’s silence answered first.
“The transfer requires a living descendant.”
Lily’s blood turned cold.
She stood too quickly and gripped the table.
Rachel supported her.
“I’m not saying Margaret intends physical harm.”
“You’re saying she benefits if my daughter dies.”
“I’m saying you should not be alone.”
Rachel arranged for a security service to escort Lily home.
But before they left, Rachel received a call.
Adam’s return flight had been delayed by severe weather.
He would not arrive until late the following night.
Lily looked down at the message.
Then the apartment concierge called.

Margaret had arrived with a locksmith and claimed there was a family emergency.
