Chapter 15 - THE AIRPORT CALL
Police issued an alert before Margaret reached the airport.
Her passport was flagged.
Her accounts were frozen.
But she had not purchased the airline ticket under her own name.
She used the identity of a former foundation employee who had died two years earlier.
Margaret entered the private terminal wearing a dark wig and glasses.
She carried one small suitcase.
Inside were jewelry, cash, encrypted drives, and original loan documents connecting her to offshore accounts.
She might have escaped if she had not called Adam.
He was sitting beside Lily when his phone rang.
Lily had regained consciousness only an hour earlier.
She was weak, but awake.
Adam placed the call on speaker.
Margaret’s voice trembled with controlled anger.
“This can still be fixed.”
“Where are you?”
“That doesn’t matter.”
“It matters to the police.”
Margaret laughed bitterly.
“You would send police after your own mother?”
“You left my wife and daughter to die.”
“I knew Lily would find a way to call someone.”
“She called you.”
“You have always been weak where she is concerned.”
Adam looked at Lily.
For years, Margaret had taught him that loving his wife meant betraying his mother.
Now he finally understood the trap.
“No,” he said. “I was weak when I kept asking Lily to forgive what I was too afraid to confront.”
Margaret’s voice cracked.
“Your father wanted to erase me.”
“He wanted to stop you.”
“I gave that man thirty years.”
“And you stole from everything he built.”
A boarding announcement sounded faintly behind her.
The detective listening nearby wrote something down.
Private terminal. International departure.
Officers moved through the airport.
Margaret heard shouting.
“Adam, tell them to stop.”
“No.”
“I am your mother.”
“And Lily is my wife. Rose is my daughter.”
Margaret’s breathing became frantic.
“You will regret choosing them.”
Adam’s voice remained calm.
“I regret that I waited this long.”
Police surrounded Margaret near the gate.
She dropped the phone.
The final thing Adam heard was an officer ordering her to place her hands where they could be seen.
Lily closed her eyes as tears slipped down her cheeks.
“Is it over?”
Adam held her hand.
“The running is.”
But Rachel entered with another file.
