Chapter 13 - THE WOMAN THOMAS TRUSTED
Thomas Cole’s letter was written eight weeks before his death.
Adam recognized his father’s handwriting immediately.
The letter explained that Thomas had begun questioning Margaret’s control of the family foundation.
He needed a successor who understood money but was not controlled by wealth.
He chose Lily.
At the time, Lily and Adam were only engaged.
Lily had once discovered a major accounting error that would have benefited Adam’s company.
She could have remained silent and earned a promotion.
Instead, she reported it, costing herself the position.
Thomas never forgot.
Upon the birth of Adam’s first living child, Lily would become independent co-trustee of the Cole Family Trust.
She would receive immediate access to every account and the authority to suspend any trustee suspected of misconduct.
Margaret’s control would end.
Adam would become the other co-trustee, but neither could overrule Lily regarding an investigation into prior fraud.
“My father trusted her more than he trusted me,” Adam said.
Rachel shook her head.
“He trusted both of you differently. He knew you loved your mother. He feared that love could be used against your judgment.”
Adam looked toward Lily’s hospital room.
His father had been right.
Margaret had spent years teaching Adam that peace required silence.
Lily had spent years paying the price.
Rachel continued reading.
Thomas had also created a protected inheritance for his first grandchild.
Rose’s birth transferred a large block of company shares into a trust Margaret could never access.
The missing four million dollars was only part of the problem.
Investigators believed Margaret had pledged family assets as collateral for private loans.
The audit could expose losses exceeding thirty million dollars.
“She didn’t just want more time,” Rachel said. “She needed the baby’s birth delayed long enough to move assets overseas.”
Adam’s phone rang.
It was Margaret.
This time, police asked him to answer.
They wanted her to talk.
Adam pressed speaker and began recording.
Margaret’s first words were calm.
“I know Rachel opened the letter.”
Adam looked at the detective.
“How?”
Margaret ignored the question.
“Your wife is going to destroy everything your father built.”
“No,” Adam said. “She’s going to find out what you did to it.”
Margaret’s voice turned sharp.
“You still have time to choose your real family.”
Adam looked through the glass at Lily.
