Chapter 6 - THE WARNING ADAM DIDN’T UNDERSTAND
Adam called from his hotel that night.
Lily told him about the agreement.
She told him about the missing money.
She told him Margaret had entered the apartment uninvited and taken a financial record.
Adam listened quietly.
Then he asked, “Are you sure she took it?”
Lily closed her eyes.
“The page was there before she arrived.”
“Maybe you moved it.”
“I photographed the file.”
“I’m not saying you imagined it.”
“That is exactly what you’re saying.”
Adam rubbed his forehead on the screen.
He had spent his entire life managing Margaret’s anger by softening every accusation against her.
His father had done the same.
“She probably panicked because she thought you were accusing her,” he said.
“I am accusing her.”
“Lily, four million dollars doesn’t just disappear.”
“It didn’t disappear. She transferred it to herself.”
Adam went silent.
Lily hated the relief she felt when doubt finally entered his expression.
She sent him three account statements.
He studied them.
“I’ll call the foundation’s finance director.”
“Do not warn her.”
“I won’t.”
“Promise me.”
“I promise.”
Then Adam said the sentence that would haunt him later.
“Until I get home, don’t let this become bigger than it is.”
Lily’s voice became quiet.
“I think it is already bigger than you want it to be.”
Adam apologized.
He promised to return the next evening rather than Thursday.
After the call, Lily activated a safety application Rachel had recommended.
The app recorded audio when triggered and automatically uploaded files to an encrypted cloud account.
Lily placed the emergency shortcut on her home screen.
At midnight, the baby stopped moving.
Lily panicked and called her obstetrician.
The doctor asked her to drink something cold and lie on her left side.
A few minutes later, Rose kicked.
Relief flooded through Lily.
Then the security system announced that someone had attempted to access the apartment using the backup code.
The attempt failed because Lily had changed it after Margaret’s visit.
Her phone rang immediately.
Margaret.
Lily did not answer.
A voicemail appeared.
“You are making a mistake by locking family out.”
Lily forwarded it to Rachel.
Rachel replied with six words.
