Chapter 19 - THE SON WHO FINALLY SPOKE
Margaret’s trial began eight months after Rose’s birth.
Lily entered the courtroom holding Adam’s hand.
Her physical scars had faded.
The emotional ones remained, but they no longer controlled her voice.
Margaret sat at the defense table in a dark suit.
She looked smaller than Lily remembered.
Still, when Adam approached the witness stand, Margaret stared at him like a mother waiting for her child to obey.
Adam testified about the agreement.
The missing funds.
His mother’s lies during the ambulance ride.
He admitted that Lily had warned him repeatedly.
“I minimized her fear because confronting my mother was uncomfortable,” he said.
The prosecutor asked, “Do you blame yourself for Margaret Cole’s actions?”
“No. She chose what she did.”
“Then what do you accept responsibility for?”
“For making my wife feel alone before the night she was actually left alone.”
Margaret’s attorney suggested Lily had manipulated Adam against his mother.
Adam looked directly at Margaret.
“My wife did not create the recording. My mother created it with her own words.”
Lily testified next.
She described the pain.
The shattered portrait.
Margaret forcing the nightgown over her body while refusing to call an ambulance.
She described crawling toward the phone and hearing Margaret reject her final plea.
The defense attorney asked why Lily had refused to unlock the phone.
“Because the evidence belonged to everyone Margaret stole from.”
“Even if surrendering it might have brought help sooner?”
Lily’s eyes sharpened.
“She never offered help in exchange for the phone. She demanded the phone while deciding whether my child deserved help at all.”
The complete recording played.
Jurors heard Margaret ask how the audit could be stopped.
They heard Lily begging.
They heard Margaret leave.
The jury returned guilty verdicts on every major count.
Margaret received a lengthy prison sentence and was ordered to surrender assets for restitution.
Before officers led her away, she looked at Adam.
“You did this to me.”
Adam answered quietly.
“No. We finally stopped helping you do it to everyone else.”
Outside the courthouse, Lily found Rose waiting with Rachel and the nanny.
Rose was healthy, laughing, and reaching for her mother.
Lily lifted her daughter into her arms.
Justice could not return the hours they had lost.
