Chapter 1 - THE LAST PERSON WHO HEARD HER
Adam Cole stopped in the bedroom doorway with his travel bag still clutched in one hand.
“Lily… what happened?”
His pregnant wife sat curled against the headboard, both arms wrapped around her stomach.
Her wet hair clung to her colorless face. Dark stains marked the pale silk nightgown she was wearing backward.
Behind her, their wedding portrait was shattered.
Cracks spread across their smiling faces like a spiderweb. Pieces of glass glittered across the floor.
Adam dropped his bag and rushed to the bed.
“Lily, look at me.”
He supported her shoulders while reaching for his phone.
Lily tried to speak, but only a broken breath escaped.
Then her eyes moved toward her phone near the edge of the mattress.
“I called you,” she whispered.
Adam picked it up.
The screen was cracked, with a dark smear along one side.
More than twenty missed calls to him filled the call history.
Two failed calls to 911.
Then he saw one connected call.
MOM — 45 SECONDS.
Adam stopped breathing.
“She answered?”
Lily nodded weakly.
The realization in her eyes destroyed every excuse he might have made for his mother.
Lily had not hidden an accident.
She had been begging someone to save her.
Adam called emergency services and put the dispatcher on speaker.
“My wife is thirty-four weeks pregnant. She’s bleeding, and she can barely stay conscious.”
“Stay on the line,” the dispatcher ordered. “Help is already moving.”
Adam wrapped Lily in his arms as sirens rose from the street below.
His phone suddenly lit up.
MOTHER.
Adam stared at the name.
Then he pressed RECORD before answering.
His mother’s voice came through smoothly.
“Adam, before Lily tells you something ridiculous—”
Lily opened her eyes.
Her voice was barely audible.
“She told me not to call again.”
Adam’s face went white.
Then Lily gripped his sleeve.
“She wasn’t just on the phone.”
A pause.

“She was here.”
