Chapter 18 - LILY’S FIRST DECISION
The Cole board expected Lily to protect the family name.
Instead, she ordered every financial record released to investigators.
Several executives objected.
They warned that public disclosure would damage the company.
Lily joined the meeting by video from the hospital.
“My daughter nearly died because people in this family believed money mattered more than accountability.”
No one interrupted her.
“We will repay every stolen dollar. We will cooperate with every investigation. No employee will be punished for reporting misconduct.”
One board member asked whether Margaret’s crimes should remain private until trial.
“No.”
“Mrs. Cole, the press will destroy her.”
Lily’s expression remained steady.
“Margaret tried to use the press to destroy me while I was unconscious.”
Adam sat beside her but allowed Lily to lead.
The board voted.
Margaret was permanently removed from every family position.
Her shares were placed under court supervision for restitution.
The foundation director and two accountants who had helped conceal transfers were fired and charged.
Employees who had raised concerns in the past were invited to return.
Lily created an independent ethics office with authority above the board.
She also ordered the foundation to establish an emergency program for pregnant women experiencing domestic or financial abuse.
Rachel smiled when the vote passed.
“Thomas chose correctly.”
The criminal case against Margaret grew stronger.
She was charged with financial crimes, obstruction, unlawful access to medical information, evidence destruction, and conduct connected to the deliberate delay of emergency care.
Her attorney offered a defense based on panic.
The forty-five-second phone call destroyed it.
A telecommunications expert recovered the complete audio.
Lily’s voice could be heard clearly.
“I’m bleeding. I can’t feel the baby. Please call someone.”
Margaret answered:
“No. You created this situation. Do not call me again.”
Then Lily said something no one had heard before.
“You were here. You know I didn’t fall.”
Margaret replied:
“No one will believe you over me.”
That sentence became the center of the prosecution’s case.
