Chapter 9 - WHAT EMILY WAS AFRAID TO SAY
Emily’s formal interview took place the following morning in a child-advocacy center.
Daniel watched from another room with a detective and a licensed interviewer.
He could not hear the first questions.
He could only see his daughter holding a stuffed rabbit.
She looked very small in the large chair.
The interviewer began with ordinary subjects.
School.
Favorite books.
Her treehouse.
Then she asked about Derek.
Emily lowered her eyes.
“Mom said he was helping us.”
“Helping with what?”
“Getting Dad out of trouble.”
“What trouble?”
Emily hesitated.
“Money trouble. But Dad didn’t know.”
She explained that Derek entered Daniel’s office.
Made her repeat sentences.
Took photographs of her injuries.
She said Lauren told her the police would think Daniel caused them.
“Did your father cause any of the injuries?”
Emily shook her head.
“No. Dad wasn’t home.”
“Who was there?”
“Derek.”
“And your mother?”
Emily held the rabbit tighter.
“She watched sometimes.”
Daniel turned away from the window.
His knees weakened.
Detective Brooks placed a hand on his shoulder but said nothing.
Emily continued.
She described the hidden camera.
The locked bedroom.
The tablet beneath the floorboard.
Then she revealed something no adult expected.
“Derek said after Dad went away, Mom would get my grandma money.”
The trust.
Daniel looked toward the detective.
Emily knew only that her grandmother had left something for her.
She did not understand the amount.
She did not know Derek had already prepared court papers.
The interviewer asked whether Emily believed Lauren wanted her father to return.
“No.”
“Why?”
“Mom said Friday would be the last time he came home.”
Daniel’s face went cold.
That sentence could mean divorce.
Arrest.
Or something worse.
Police obtained an emergency warrant to search the house before Derek could arrange for evidence to disappear.
Emily gave them one final instruction.
“The floor under the purple rug opens.”
Inside her bedroom, officers found the hidden tablet.
Its battery was dead.
